Overview of Food as Prevention Website

For the last several months, I have been learning how to build a website, and am pleased to announce that it is now ready for you to check out at foodasprevention.com

As you will see from the homepage of my website, I try and cater to the general public, healthcare workers and those with some knowledge/interest in the health benefits of food (see links for each of these groups on the homepage).  I also have a list of references  for papers that I use in my talks.  I try and keep my pages short but give readers the option of ‘going deep’ via the multiple links on every page.  If you want to really understand the main points, I encourage you to follow these links.

Once you have read the first page, I suggest you go to the ‘Getting Started’ tab and work your way down the options

1) Our Current Diet.  is a good introduction to an evidence-based approach to diet & disease prevention.  It starts with some excellent web-based videos on the subject and then directs you to a DVD (‘Forks over knives’) that is widely available to introduce the subject.  You are also introduced to the definitive book on this whole subject (‘How not to die’ by Dr Greger).

2) Supplements address which supplements are necessary for optimal health.

3) Organic vs Conventional Produce explains which foods are best to purchase as organic.

4) Diseases looks at a dietary approach to adult onset (type 2) diabetes, inflammatory conditionsheart disease, and cancer.

5) Common Questions address issues like getting enough protein and calcium and cost.

6) Get Going – Programs and Sites links you with clear steps to start integrating the principles learned along with links to multiple sites to help you make the transition.

7) Getting Started – Simple Recipes has a very simple breakfast and lunch example to help you.  I have also started a page recipes which have been tried by patients of mine and found to be tasty and easy to make – see here.

‘Hot Topics’ are recent articles which I think are of great interest

Resources’ includes lots of recipes, events including my speaking schedule, my newsletter, a list of references, and a glossary of nutrition terms

I just added a 4 week plan for transitioning to a Whole Food Plant-based (WFPB) – see here

I also have special pages for the following groups:

  1. Healthcare workers  (see here) – with links to databases & evidence-based resources
  2. Those with nutrition / Food as Medicine experience (see here) – more resources and numbers related to food.

I have also learned how to make a more professional newsletter using a site called Mailchimp.  See here for an example of my new newsletter.  More examples here.

If you’d like to sign up for my periodic newsletter  click here.  You can unsubscribe automatically at any time.  If you want to be sure to  receive my newsletter, please add the foodasprevention@gmail.com to your address book (otherwise the new newsletter may end up in your spam folder).

If you’d like to know about my upcoming public talks, see here..  I am also starting to put summaries of recent talks on the site (eg here).

I also have videos of recent talks I have given.  Please note that some of the videos start with 3 minutes of mindfulness meditation.  Topic include Food as Prevention for Obesity & Diabetes, Cancer, and Cardiovascular Diseases as well as a talk on a Practical Approach to a Whole Food Plant-based Diet.

If you are already familiar with the benefits of a Whole Food Plant-based Diet you might enjoy my pages on the role of organic produce, and  avoiding endocrine modifiers.

Finally, you will see a red tab labelled “Feedback” at the bottom left corner of every page – this is for your frank (and anonymous) feedback to help me improve the site – PLEASE fill this out for a few pages – it should take less than a minute.  If you want me to get back to you, please fill in your name and e-mail as the form is anonymous.

I hope this overview has been of some use – you can give me anonymous feedback on it by clicking here).
