Unprocessed and Processed Meat Guidelines ACP

On September 30th, 2019 six papers and an editorial about meat (processed and unprocessed) were released.

I was initially very taken back by these conclusions which did not seem to be supported by the data in the rest of the paper – then I came across the video below which put these papers in a whole new light (pay particular attention to minutes 7-8):

On October 4th 2019, it also came to light that the main author of the papers (Bradley Johnston) failed to disclose past ties to the food industry (which were not minor). These financial ties were made even clearer in an article by the Washington Post on October 14th 2019.

Objections to the conclusions made by these papers are already flooding in – see below:

  1. This article from the Food Revolution Network summarizes the objections of many influential bodies.
  2. Dr T Colin Campbell, author of The China Study – see here
  3. Dr Dean Ornish, who has published studies proving that diet & lifestyle changes can REVERSE heart disease and prostate cancer probably explains things best – see here.
  4. Harvard University does not agree with the conclusions – see here
  5. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine also has objections – see here. They have an excellent podcast about this as well – see here.
  6. Dr Scott Stoll at the Plantrician project is also very critical.

As you can see in these excerpts from the American 2020 Dietary Guidelines Hearing there are widely conflicting points of view :

If you’d like to hear the opinion of a plant-based cardiologist on this topic, here is a recent podcast by Dr Shane Williams addressing these papers.

In addition, even the newspapers are seeing some problems as shown by this article by the BBC.
