Motivational Interviewing

An excellent skill for those interested in Lifestyle Medicine is Motivational Interviewing (MI) – for example see the brief example of a patient interaction without and with the use of MI.

An excellent book on this topic is “Motivational Interviewing in Nutrition and Fitness” by Dawn Clifford – it is a great introduction to motivational interviewing theory and practice and can be applied in almost any clinical situation. The author also has an excellent series of brief videos about Motivational Interviewing on YouTube (see here).

The best way of mastering the skill of Motivational Interviewing is to attend a workshop – many are available through MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) – I greatly enjoyed a 3 day introductory course given by Michael Fulop.

Subhas Ganguli
